Welcome to Snippets of Science!

Who I am, what this blog is for, plans for the future, and how to support me.

My name is Derek Troutman and this is a personal project of mine to not only practice my writing skills, but also to stay up to date on the latest science news. A brief biography for myself: I’m a UK resident with a Bachelors degree in Marine Biology and a Masters degree in Science Communication. Hopefully, you will be able to expect a few news articles a week, and I plan on releasing a feature style piece about a topic I either find interesting or want to learn more about every week. I will also occasionally post videos and host live-streams on my YouTube channel, also called Snippets of Science. As we all know, though, life can get in the way, so if I miss a week or two, I’ve probably become busy at work.

To finish up, some general housekeeping. My AI policy is very simple; I will not be using any form of generative AI in any aspect of this blog. My goal is to work on my own writing skills, and using AI in this form feels like I’d be lying to all of you. All images that I source will be used with the permission of their creators, either directly or by licensing. And finally, I will be endeavouring to keep this website ad free. That means no algorithmically generated ads, and no sponsored posts. This is a hobby first and foremost. If you want to support what I do, feel free to visit my Ko-Fi and leave me a tip! Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to writing for everyone!

This sounds very interesting: as someone with an interest in science-y stuff that isn’t quite matched by my understanding (humanities graduate, sorry!) I look forward to seeing what you post. Good luck with the blog and YouTube channel!
