Welcome to my blog, I’m Derek Troutman. I first became interested in science when I was very young, thanks in large part to science communicators like David Attenborough, Brian Cox, and Bill Nye (the Science Guy). I became dedicated to learning everything I could, and went to university to study marine biology. As it turns out, I enjoyed the learning aspect much more than the field research, so I pivoted to study science communication for my Masters degree.
The Snippets of Science project first started in 2020 as the YouTube channel, as a way to prove to myself that I could make interesting science content. It was after this that I decided to switch my focus away from the ocean and toward curious minds. After I finished my degree, I wanted to branch out, away from just video content and toward a more journalistic outlet. Thus, snippetsof.science was born.
